 Where to Stay in Afton

With a few wineries, Blue Mountain Beer, some antique shops and its close proximity to Wintergreen Resort, Afton is experiencing a re-birth as a weekend destination.  Consider staying in a Bed & Breakfast when visiting Afton, Virginia:

A No-Cell-Phone Vacation in Nelson County

When I want to take a break from my cell phone and email, I head over to Montebello in Nelson County.  It is also one of my favorite regions of the county.  Recently, I received an email from a family that is looking for a technology-free vacation.  There entire family has become overwhelmed with cell phone calls, text messaging, email and Internet surfing. 

Most cell phone service providers do not provide coverage in the Montebello region of Nelson County.  What can you do with all of that free time?

There is fishing, hiking on marked trails, relaxing with great views, lakes, rivers, camp fires, tent camping, cabins and mountain history.  The Blue Ridge Parkway also runs close to Montebello and provides many features for family-fun.

One of Nelson County’s most popular hiking trails is near Montebello, the Crabtree Falls trail.  The Appalachian Trail also passes close to Montebello.  For details, check out my Blog Archive at www.ExperienceNelsonCounty.com and click on the Hiking library.  Also in the Blog Archive are stories about fishing in Nelson County.  There are some great fishing spots near Montebello.

Montebello Camping & Fishing Resort
Located atop the Blue Ridge Mountains, there are 4 cabins available year round.  The Pioneer Cabin is an 1800's log cabin with a fireplace and loft; the 7 Ridges Cabin has gas log fireplace, a loft and a beautiful view of the mountains from the large front porch; our 2 Mountain View Cabins also offer a wonderful view of the mountains. Crabtree Falls Campground
Just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, on the Tye River near Crabtree Falls, highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. Options for tent, RV or camping cabins. Cabins Across Nelson

Nelson County has many interesting cabins to rent.  The cabins in this story are outside of Wintergreen Resort or a camping area.  They are all privately owned and in diverse locations across the county.  Renting a private cabin is a great way to relax while experiencing different regions of the county.  These private homes provide private get-a-way and are perfect for Honeymoons and family vacations.  They are also popular with families who like to cook at home on vacation.  I have heard from a few families that have food allergies and prefer to cook at home while on vacation.  A private cabin rental is a great solution.

Rentals in Wintergreen Resort & Nelson County

In the last two weeks, I have received many calls and emails about rentals in Wintergreen Resort.  Many have realized that Wintergreen is less than a tank of gas from their city homes.  Visiting Wintergreen for a long weekend or even a week is less expensive than many vacations.

Wintergreen Resort Home & Villa Rentals:  This is the official program run through the resort staff.  For availability, check out www.WintergreenResort.com  This program has rentals of all sizes, from studio condos to large 9 bedroom houses. 

Vacation Rentals by Owner:  This web site at www.VRBO.com has become very popular.  There are some great Summer specials by owners pitched on this site this week.  Yesterday, I talked to an owner who has his 2BR condo advertised on this web site and he said that calls have increased as gas prices have shot up.  (go to the web site and click on Virginia, then click on Wintergreen for a showcase of rentals)  There are also rentals on this site that are in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but outside of the resort. 

Craig’s List:  This has become a popular way to advertise Wintergreen and Nelson County rentals.  Go to www.craigslist.com.  Click on your city, such as Richmond and then click on Vacation Rentals to see the ads. 

Private Rentals:  Private rentals are also popular.  One of my favorites can be found at www.IIMoose.com   This is a 2BR, 2BA condo that is within walking distance of the Mountain Inn, restaurants, the kid’s Tree House and the shuttle stop.  Prices starting at only $99 a night this Summer and a Gas Allowance.
